Les Reed has been appointed as the Football Association 's new technical director.
The 66-year-old succeeds Dan Ashworth, who will take up a new role with Premier League club Brighton in the spring.
Reed was dismissed as Southampton vice-chairman last month, a move which proved a precursor to the sacking of Saints manager Mark Hughes.
"I am honoured to be appointed as the FA's technical director at such an exciting time for the game in this country," Reed said in a statement.
"We are coming off the back of the most incredible year and I have nothing but respect for the outstanding work of Dan Ashworth and all the coaches and staff at St George's Park."

Reed, who was part of the England set-up under Kevin Keegan, had been with Southampton since 2010 until last month.
His role with the FA comes with responsibility for all elite England men's sides from development teams through to the seniors.
Gareth Southgate's senior team reached the World Cup semi-finals earlier this year while England are reigning men's world champions at Under-20 and Under-17 level.
Outgoing FA chief executive Martin Glenn said: "We are pleased to confirm Les Reed as Dan Ashworth's successor as technical director and believe he is the right person to continue to build on the clear signs of progression at St George's Park.
"Les' experience in the game is unrivalled so it is no surprise that he came through a thorough recruitment process as the outstanding candidate. As well as working."
