Two six-year-old girls have been sexually assaulted by a man thought to be in his late teens or early 20s at the Legoland theme park in Windsor.

The attack happened between 12.15pm and 12.30pm on Thursday, at the Castaway Camp playground in the Pirate Shores area of the Berkshire resort.

The offender, who was not known to the victims, is described as a white man, possibly under 5ft 8ins tall, wearing dark-coloured slim-fitting trousers, a dark-coloured T-shirt and trainers.

A spokesperson for Legoland said the resort is "deeply shocked" by the incident and is assisting the police in their investigation.

Detective Inspector Penny Mackenzie, of Thames Valley Police, asked all yesterday's visitors to the resort, especially those who went to Castaway Camp in Pirate Shores, to check photographs to see if they recognise anyone matching the offender.

“If you recognise the offender's description or have some other information, no matter how insignificant you think it is, we want to hear from you,” she said.

Legoland Windsor is the most visited theme park in the UK and the 9th most visited in Europe, with 2.25 million visitors in 2015, according to the Themed Entertainment Association.

The Castaway Camp is an adventure playground meant for children aged 5-12 with slides, climbing nets and bridges. It opened in 2014.

On its website, the resort says children playing at the Castaway Camp should be supervised by an adult over 16.

In a statement, a Legoland spokesperson said: "On Thursday 11 August the Legoland Windsor Resort team were alerted to an alleged assault that took place in the Castaway Camp playground.

"Our team members acted swiftly and the Thames Valley Police were immediately called. The safety and security of the families enjoying a day out with us is our number one priority.

"We are now working closely with the Police in assisting them with their investigation. Nothing of this nature has ever taken place at the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort before and we are deeply shocked by the incident."

Witnesses asked to email police on URN615@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk. Anyone with information can call 101 or the charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
